Child Welfare Report and Consequence

Learning Objectives

Learners will be able to describe why some health professionals report birthing people who use drugs to child welfare, and what the consequences of the report are for the child, parent, family, and community.

  • Define overreporting
  • Name the ways that drug testing contributes to overreporting, particularly of Black and Indigenous people
  • Describe the state of the evidence regarding the relationship between drug use during pregnancy and subsequent maltreatment
  • Describe the relationship between mandatory reporting policies and population health
  • Critically assess whether child welfare provides relevant and appropriate service

Joyce is a thought leader, advocate, community organizer, educator, and the Founder and Executive Director of Just Making A Change for Families (JMACforFamilies) . Her advocacy is motivated by her personal experience with the family policing system.
