Welcome to your ROC rotation!

We hope you will all strive to receive the Ryan Award this year. In order to be eligible, the resident should meet or exceed expectations for all of the below:

  1. Completion of Ryan modules: must have completed 100% of modules
  2. Clinical skills: could be given “expert” designation for first tri ab and is close to achieving competency for second tri abortion procedures.
  3. Medical knowledge: Aware of basics of all FP methods: eg. effectiveness of mab, contraindications for mab, timing of dosing, risks of surgical ab, procedure for D&E, US MEC, practices for difficult removals of IUDs and implants
  4. Teaching: Consistently teaches medical students and junior residents family planning skills. Presents assigned didactics.
  5. Humanism: Shows extraordinary commitment to patient-centeredness, understands and can articulate the psychosocial components of abortion and contraceptive care, aware of own biases, aware of social problem impacts on abortion care (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, +)
  6. Research/quality improvement: Has focused their research or quality improvement work on a family planning topic and made substantial progress on it.
  7. Advocacy: Has participated in advocacy work around access to reproductive healthcare.

We also wanted to re-state expectations regarding OR for reproductive options patients. D&E, especially those greater than 20 weeks, are a senior level case to be completed by a PGY-3 or 4 in the OR. Any exceptions must be approved by the attending, and any resident interested in performing D&E must complete all of their D&E modules in this course prior to performing cases.

We all look forward to teaching and learning with you this year. Please contact Dr Russo with any questions at jrusso@dhs.lacounty.gov.
