Welcome to the FP rotation. Along with the other Family Planning core faculty, I am excited to work with you over the next month and change and hope to be able to meet your learning goals. This course is designed to give you resources to at least provide an introduction to some of the most important family planning topics. It is not exhaustive AND does not mean we won’t encounter situations for which we need to do further research.

Here are a few additional important goals and responsibilities that we often discuss in person but will put in writing so they are not missed.

1.       The resident is responsible for involving the medical student including where to be (clinic vs OR), what time, what patients they should see.  You should NOT have the med student come for your orientation if you’re coming to clinic early. That gives us time to talk.

2.       We expect you to arrive at least 30 min before OR start time to check in the patient, finalize paperwork, deliver the consent, etc.

3.       Patients need a brief op note before starting the next OR case unless they have a full OP note between cases. OP notes need to be completed by end of day. Attendings are usually happy to help. Just ask. Jonas often gets the shpilkes between cases and does the note. He’s trying to break the habit.

4.       Clinic notes should be completed before starting the next clinic.

a.       When you are done with clinic notes, put them in your name and forward to the attending. That way you will get the lab results.

b.       These are your patients! That means please verify with them how they’d like results and send those results. Letting them linger in your inbasket gives Jonas the shpilkes. You should shoot for turnaround by 48 hours max.

5.       One skill we want you to learn is how to run a busy clinic and juggle a few different tasks. Attendings are happy to see patients on our own, if needed. And we want you to realize WHEN it’s needed and ASK.

6.       I am sharing some templates with you. These start .FP. Please use them. If you find mistakes or that one you need is missing let Jonas know. If you use the old templates, Dr. Alfonso has threatened to make you run sprints in the 1J hallway.

7.       You will each have a sticker chart checklist. You’ll see. It’s new is sensationally popular.

Let me know if you have questions.

Jonas
