
Welcome to the Family Planning Rotation at Prisma Health – University of South Carolina!
We are proudly a program site for the Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program in Abortion and Family Planning. The goal of this rotation is to develop clinical skills in family planning and abortion services and to develop awareness of the larger role that access to these services plays in the lives of our patients. Participation in performing abortion procedures is optional, and will be discussed on an individual basis.
Learning Objectives
a. Understand the hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle, and how different systemic contraceptives manipulate that cycle
b. Describe the mechanisms of hormonal and non-hormonal contraception
c. Describe the advantages, disadvantages, contraindications, failure rates, complications and appropriate follow up associated with the following methods of contraception:
— sterilization
— combined oral contraception
— progesterone-only oral contraception
— transdermal contraception
— subdermal contraception
— vaginal contraception
— injectable steroid contraception
— intrauterine devices
— barrier methods
— natural family planning
d. Describe the appropriate methods, use, and effectiveness of post-coital contraception
e. Understand the selection of contraceptive options in the face of medical comorbidity
f. Develop a strategy for providing counseling about family planning and safer sex methods
g. Review pregnancy testing methods and pregnancy dating methods
h. Review diagnosis and treatment of early pregnancy failure and ectopic pregnancy
i. Counsel patients about all alternatives available to them for unplanned pregnancy including parenting, adoption, and induced abortion
j. Understand and comply with state laws requiring 24-hour waiting period prior to abortion
k. Understand pre-operative evaluation and elicit pertinent history from patients requesting induced abortion
l. Perform bimanual pelvic exam and transvaginal and/or abdominal ultrasound to date
early pregnancies
m. Describe techniques, counseling, and appropriate timing for pregnancy termination methods including suction curettage, dilation and evacuation, and medical abortion. Residents opting to perform abortions will demonstrate procedural skill and competency with manual vacuum aspiration, electric suction aspiration (D&C), and evaluation of
POCs
n. Describe and understand treatment of potential complications of pregnancy termination
o. Explore social, political, economic, cultural, and personal issues surrounding abortion care and access to reproductive health care.

Complex Contraception and MVA Clinic
This clinic will take place at 1801 Sunset on a weekly basis on Fridays. The goal is to have a clinic devoted to complicated contraception initiation and management, insertion and removal of long-acting reversible contraceptives, and performing paracervical block and manual vacuum aspiration for patients diagnosed with early pregnancy failure and meeting criteria for in-office evacuation.

Planned Parenthood
During the rotation Tuesdays will be spent at Planned Parenthood to allow diverse exposure to
contraceptive uptake and pregnancy evaluation and options counseling. Residents will be able
to participate in counseling and preoperative evaluation for medical and surgical abortions, and
have an opportunity to observe or perform first trimester non-medically indicated abortion
procedures.
